Yan Xiao, PhD is a human factors specialist and patient safety researcher. He is professor in College of Nursing and Health Innovation at University of Texas at Arlington. Currently he leads a multi- university consortium as a federally funded patient safety learning lab to improve medication safety in primary care. His other sponsored research includes sensor-based objective assessment of pain and systems improvement of patient safety in dentistry. He was full professor in the department of anesthesiology at University of Maryland till 2009, and Director for Human Factors at Baylor Scott & White Health till 2017. He has served as a peer reviewer in several federal funding agencies. Xiao contributed to the fields of human factors and patient safety in topics including patient engagement, usability and design of health information technology, team performance, clinical alarms, and safety improvement methodologies. He is the chair of committee on scientific evaluation of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and a member since 2014.
