Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIED)

Caring safely for patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators depends on getting a few things right: identifying the device, knowing how it is programmed, anticipating electromagnetic interference, and having a plan before the first incision.

The newest APSF TEI course is built around those decisions. It has eight modules:

  • Introduction to Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIEDs)
  • Principles of Basic Electrophysiology (Optional)
  • Understanding the CIED – Pacemakers and Defibrillators
  • Understanding Electromagnetic Interference
  • Perioperative Management of CIEDs – Pacemaker
  • Perioperative Management of CIEDs – Defibrillator
  • On the Horizon – What’s Next for CIEDs and Why it Matters to the Anesthesia Professional
  • CIED Identification and Perioperative Management Selection

The course is free to any learner. Completing it earns 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ with patient safety designation and 3 MOCA® QI points. Category 1 credit is often accepted for nursing and PA continuing education, so check with your CE program.

The course is hosted on the ASA website. ASA members can sign in with their usual credentials. Non-members can create a free ASA account.
