The grant programs by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF), in addition to a joint program with the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), received 31 Letters of Intent from 27 institutions across the United States and Canada during the 2026-2027 funding cycle (Table 1 and Figure 1). The aim of the Investigator Initiated Research (IIR) Grant program is to stimulate and fund studies that will clearly improve patient safety and lead to the prevention of mortality and morbidity relates to adverse events in anesthesia . The IIR program funds up to $200,000 for each project. The objective of the APSF-FAER Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) program is to develop the next generation of perioperative patient safety scientists. The APSF-FAER MRTG program funds up to $300,000 for each project.

In the 2025-2026 funding cycle, APSF awarded two projects in the IIR Grant program. No APSF-FAER MRTG award was made for the 2025-2026 period. The deadlines for the 2027-2028 funding cycles may be found on the APSF website under “Grants & Awards”, along with projects funded.

Meghan Lane-Fall, MD PhD, is a Director of the Board of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the E. M. Papper Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and Anesthesiologist-in-Chief of the New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
