- This randomised controlled trial was conducted in Cairo University to compare the hemodynamic profiles of lidocaine versus opioid based induction with propofol.
- Patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery who were 60 years of age or older and had an ASA physical status of I to III were the subjects of the study. One hundred and thirteen individuals who met inclusion criteria were assessed, of those 13 were excluded due to conditions including refusal, uncontrolled hypertension, difficult intubation and others.
- Hypotension was exhibited by 0% (0/47) of patients in the lidocaine group, 61% (28/46) of patients in the fentanyl group, with 13% suffering from severe hypotension. The mean blood pressure dropped in both groups from pre-induction level, although the drop was more pronounced in the fentanyl group. One patient in the fentanyl group experienced bradycardia as well.
- In conclusion, lidocaine based regimen reduced post induction hypotension in older patients than the fentanyl based induction.
