
John Allyn, MD
APSF Patient Safety Priorities Advisory Group - Culture of Safety, Teamwork and Clinician Safety
John W. Allyn, MD graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in 1984 and then completed an anesthesiology residency and cardiac anesthesiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. He worked as a member of MGH’s cardiac anesthesia group until 1994 when he moved to Maine, becoming employed by what is now Spectrum Healthcare Partners, and working primarily at Maine Medical Center (MMC). Since 1994 he has served in several roles for the MMC’s Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine: Residency Program Director (1996-2003), Assistant Chief (2000-2003), and Chief (2003-2017), and is currently serving as Vice Chair of Academics. Allyn is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine with Tufts University School of Medicine. From 2008-2020 he was member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ (ASA’s) Quality Management and Department Administration Committee leading a Culture of Safety workgroup for this committee. Since 2020, the Culture of Safety workgroup has been overseen by the ASA’s Committee on Patient Safety and Education of which John is a member.
