2008 Grant Recipients

The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation Scientific Evaluation Committee is pleased to announce the 2008 APSF Grant recipients:  

  • David J. Murray, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology
    Washington University School of Medicine

Dr. Murray's Education and Training grant in the amount of $149,992 entitled, "A Web-Based Training Program for Ultrasound-Guided Central Line Insertion" was selected for funding.  In addition, Dr. Murray's grant was selected to receive the designation of Ellison C. Pierce, Jr., MD Research Award, in recognition of one of the founders of APSF.  This named award carries an additional, unrestricted monetary award in the amount of $5,000.  

 

 

  • Thomas J. Ebert, MD, PhD
    Department of Anesthesiology
    Medical College of Wisconsin

Dr. Ebert's Clinical Research application entitled, "Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Adverse Perioperative Outcomes" in the amount of $150,000, was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding. This grant also was designated as the APSF/American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Endowed Research Award, made possible by the continuous and generous support of the ASA.

 

 

  • Jacqueline M. Leung, MD, MPH
    Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care
    University of California, San Francisco

Dr. Leung's Clinical Research application entitled, "Pathophysiology of Postoperative Delirium" in the amount of $149,800, was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding. This grant also was designated as the APSF/Anesthesia Healthcare Partners (AHP) Research Award, made possible by a $150,000 grant from Anesthesia Healthcare Partners.

 

 

  • Mark D. Rollins, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care
    University of California, San Francisco

Dr. Rollins' Clinical Research application entitled, "Supplemental Oxygen: A Reduction in Pulse Oximetry Sensitivity or an Increased Margin of Safety?" in the amount of $150,000, was selected for funding by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee.  This grant was also designated as the APSF/Cardinal Health Foundation Research Award, made possible by a $150,000 grant from the Cardinal Health Foundation.

 

 

  • Benjamin A. Kohl, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care
    University of Pennsylvania

 Dr. Kohl's Clinical Research application entitled, "Identifying a Novel Mechanism for Perioperative Hyperglycemia in Cardiac Surgery: A Role for Incretins" in the amount of $150,000, was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding.  This grant was also designated as the APSF/Merck Research Award, made possible by a partial ($100,000) grant from Merck and Company. 

 

 

  • Asokumar Buvanendran, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology
    Rush University Medical Center

Dr. Buvanendran's Clinical Research application entitled, "Patients after Minor Surgery with Monitored Anesthesia Care - Is It Safe to Drive?" was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding. Dr. Buvanendran's grant support is in the amount of $149,775.

 

 

  • Zeev Friedman, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology
    University of Toronto

Dr. Friedman's Clinical Research application entitled,  "Evaluation of an Anatomically Guided, Logically Formulated Airway Measure to Predict Difficult Intubations" was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding. Dr. Friedman's grant support is in the amount of $45,730.

 

 

  • Dan J. Kopacz, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology
    Medical Education and Research Institute (MERIC)
    Colorado Springs

Dr. Kopacz's Clinical Research application entitled, :Absorption of Intravascular Drugs by Intravenous Infusion of Lipid Emulsion" was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding. Dr. Kopacz's grant support is in the amount of $22,379.

 

 

  • David B. Mayer, MD
    Department of Anesthesiology
    University of Illinois, Chicago

Dr. Mayer's Education and Training application entitled, "Facilitating Patient Safety in the Operating Room through Resident Handoff Training" was selected by the APSF Scientific Evaluation Committee for funding. Dr. Mayer's grant support is in the amount of $124,687.
